Roper Opens New Berkeley Sleep Lab
The Charleston Post & Courier April 20, 2010

Those in Berkeley County now have a new sleep lab at Roper Hospital’s Berkeley facility on Stoney Landing Road in Moncks Corner.  It is affiliated with Roper Hospital’s Sleep/Wake Disorder Program which is a nationally accredited sleep center in downtown Charleston.  The lab will allow residents to receive treatment and diagnosis for sleep disorders and sleep related problems.  This is very important to many since over 40 million people a year have some type of sleep disorder.  If left untreated, sleep disorders can increase the risk for other serious medical conditions such as high blood pressure, arrhythmia, heart attack and stroke.

I chose this article because I never realized that there were centers specifically for sleep related problems and especially did not know that there were any in this state.  There are many different sleep disorders as discussed in Chapter 4.  There are also many different types of treatments for those disorders.

Reflection:
Have you or anyone you know ever had a sleep disorder? Would you go to a sleep lab if you did or have you if you do?
